These impressive ships were built at the same yard (Zhdanov, Leningrad) as the Kresta-ll class, and were originally designated BAL-COM 2 by NATO (BALtic COMbatant). The first of class, Sovremennyy, was launched in November 1978 and was first seen at sea by Western observers in August 1980, when she appeared in the Baltic on her engine trials, but still without a weapon fit. The following winter her guns and missile systems were mounted and she joined the Baltic Fleet in January 1982.

Constructed in parallel with the Udaloy class, the Sovremennyy is optimized for surface warfare. Her large internal volume, which is considerably greater than that of earlier Soviet Navy types, although less than Western equivalents such as the Spruance, indicates that she is designed for distant water deployments. She has a heavy armament of eight SS-N-22, mounted in bins in two groups of four either side of the bridge.

The SS-N-22 is an upgraded version of the SS-N-9, with a range of approximately 70nm, while the 130mm guns are fully automatic, are fitted with water cooling, indicating a high rate of fire, and are mounted in a new design of turret. Air defense missile armament consists of two SA-N-7 launchers (44 missiles) and four 30mm Gatlings. One Kamov Ka-27 Helix helicopter is carried, and the hangar is of an entirely new telescopic type not seen previously on Soviet warships. It is somewhat surprising that this class is powered by conventional steam turbines rather than the gas turbines which have been fitted in many other major classes of Soviet warship since the early 1970s.
Available evidence suggests that this class is powered by a pressure-fired automated steam propulsion plant similar to that fitted in the Kresta class, which gives very rapid acceleration (10-32 knots in less than two minutes). These are modern, state-of-the-art ships, capable of protracted ocean deployments, with very good anti-air and anti-surface capabilities, but they would need to operate in company with ASW ships to survive against a major submarine threat.

Future: There are six of these destroyers at sea (Sovremennyy.Otchyannyy, Otlichnyy and Osmotritelnyy, plus two whose names are not yet known), with a further two building. Those currently in service are all with the Northern Fleet and seem likely to remain there. Judging by previous Soviet Navy practice the known eight units will be followed by anew class.

The 130mm DP twin mount, first seen in the late 19705 on Sovremennyy class destroyers. Water-cooled, it has a maximum rate of fire of some 65 rds/min per mount; range is about 25,600 yards (28.000m).

Sovremennyy class destroyer. Mine rails and launcher chutes are evident in this drawing, as are the after twin 130mm DP gun mount and the SA-N-7 launcher.

The flight deck is clear and unobstructed, and the hangar (of a similar pattern to that on the Slava class cruisers) is neatly installed in the after end of the stack.

ASW armament is for self-defence only and these ships are unusual among recent Soviet major warships in having neither a stern-mounted variable depth sonar nor a bow-mounted LF sonar, relying instead on just one hull-mounted sonar
